World Tsunami Awareness Day Event (5 Nov. 2021)

Special Event: World Tsunami Awareness Day

The 5th of November was designated as World Tsunami Awareness Day (WTAD) by the 70th United Nations General Assembly on December 22, 2015. It was proposed by 142 countries following the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction adopted at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR) held in March 2015 in Sendai and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The document prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government of Japan in November 2015 (http://www.mofa.go.jp/mofaj/files/000126145.pdf) for UN General Assembly stated as follows.

Tsunamis are generated by sudden submarine topographic movement, such as:

 Submarine volcanic eruptions;
 Landslides near a coastline or at the bottom of the ocean; and
 Submarine crustal deformations accompanying earthquakes.

WLF5 organizes a special event for World Tsunami Awareness Day on 5 November 2021 during WLF5 in Room D.  The special event includes sessions for tsunamis induced by coastal and submarine landslides and also multi-hazard risk analysis and modelling of various types of landslide disasters linked with other hazards. Japan suffered a catastrophic earthquake- and landslide- and tsunami disaster which killed more than 15,000 persons in 1792 in the Shimabara Peninsula, Kumamoto Prefecture and Amakusa islands.
